Feel the surge of patriotic
pride alongside Popeye! It's time to celebrate our great
nation with these favorite characters. From Betty Boop's
optimistic heart, to the tales of the Old West, and places
in-between, rally 'round the flag with these fun, timeless
tales of American wonder and the humor, spirit and resolve
that make our country great!
Popeye - I'm In The Army Now - 1936 - 7
minutes - Black & White - Animated - Whoa - this one is a
winner. Popeye and Bluto are competing for the one slot
open for the Army - because Olive wants to go out with a
military man. Got it.
Popeye - Patriotic Popeye - 1957
- 6 minutes - Color -
Animated
-
It's the Fourth of July, and Popeye wants his two nephews
to have a "safe and sane" holiday. "Who wants to be safe?"
asks one nephew. "Yeah, and who wants to be sane?" asks
the other. Popeye takes away their box of fireworks, and
they plot to get it back.
Popeye - Popeye For
President - 1956 - 7 minutes - Color - Animated -
Popeye the sailor man is running for president - and it's
all tied up. Just one for vote to be cast! By guess who -
Olive maybe? Forget Bush, Gore, Bradley, and McCain - This
year - it's Popeye for President! What we love about these
cartoons are the colors - so rich and saturated - and of
course painted by hand - one by one. Nice job! This one is
a classic.
Betty Boop - Rythm On The Reservation - 1939 -
7 minutes - Black & White - Animated - Classic episode
from America's favorite gal. Betty Boop takes an adventure
to meet some real life cartoon Indians and they erupt in
an orgy of song and dance. Betty is a one-woman swing
band. A highlight is the clever manner in which the
characters create music and "swing." This is the last
appearance of Betty Boop.
Tom Sawyer -
Animated - Based on the story by Mark Twain. Set in 1850s
Missouri, Tom Sawyer is born in a small town on the banks
of the Mississippi River and brought up by his aunt. Tom
is an energetic and kind boy who always seems to find
himself in trouble.
Yankee Doodle Donkey - 1945 - 7
minutes, 11 seconds - Color - Animated - Spunky's dream to
join the Wags, the almighty dog army, comes true in this
tale of bravery and persistence. The advancing flea army
is attacking a corps of canine cadets, and the little
donkey saves the day by kicking kegs of flea powder into
the battlefield!
The Mild West - 1947 -
6 minutes, 54 seconds - Color - Animated - A silly comedy about the
untamed wild west. Not to be confused with the show The
Wild, Wild West with Robert Conrad as James West, secret
service agent. Still, this cartoon is just as politically
incorrect and tons of fun. Like many other cartoons from
the era, this one contains racial stereotyping that is
often offensive to some viewers. Our apologies, we present
it as a piece of history. Also features I am an old
cowhand sing-a-long.
Paul Bunyon -
1958 - 6 minutes, 6 seconds - Color - Animated - In this
adaptation of the American tall tale of modern technology
pushing aside old traditions, the legendary giant
lumberjack of the North (accompanied by his loyal
companion, an equally huge blue ox named Babe) must
compete in a woodcutting contest against the new-fangled
chainsaw.
The
Last Round Up - 1943 - 5 minutes, 42
seconds - Color - Animated - Gandy Goose is helping test
artillery by putting an apple on his head (to a swinging
version of the William Tell Overture). The first shell is
spot on. He backs up against a tree, and this shell comes
in low, sending Gandy through a whole line of trees. The
"dud" explodes, and sends both Gandy and his sergeant
rocketing into the air. They land in a haystack; when all
the insects greet them with Heil, they figure out
they're in Germany, conveniently near a piglike Hitler and
his monkey, Mussolini. Our heroes cause mischief, first by
lighting a map Hitler holding on fire, then by using a
slingshot to hit Mussolini with a rock. They open fire,
and Hitler ducks behind his desk to fire back with
cannons. The continued attack sends the dictators to the
elevator, and our heroes follow in the next car (down, up,
and sideways). Throughout the mansion, wherever the
dictators go, our heroes are there to greet them with a
variety of guns. Finally, they are cornered in a storage
cellar; our heroes send barrels of beer after the
dictators, then blow the place up, escaping on an airplane
with one of the barrels. The dictators land in a cemetery,
where the skeletons pop out of the ground with Heil
and our heroes hoist mugs of beer.
Picture-Quality varies on the DVD as each film has
experienced the ravages of time!!
