There are a million stories
in the naked city and the best are told in high contrast
black and white. Enter a world of hard-boiled losers,
desperate women, and incredibly dramatic lighting. It's
called Film Noir and two classic examples are presented
here. So put on your trench coat, have a seat in the
shadows, and let the flickering light from your TV screen
show you just how far a guy will go to find the truth - or
hide from it.
Whistle Stop
- 1946 - 85
minutes - Black & White - A story of love and intrigue
in a small railroad town. Kenny is an unemployed loser and
always has been, but his old flame Mary can't stop loving
him that is, until her head is turned by a local hotel
owner. Kenny manages to clean up his act and win Mary
back, only to be framed for murder by her jealous suitor.
Detour -
1945
- 67 minutes -
Black & White - In flashback, New
York nightclub pianist Al Roberts hitchhikes to Hollywood
to join his girl Sue. On a rainy night, the sleazy gambler
he's riding with mysteriously dies; afraid of the police,
Roberts takes the man's identity. But thanks to a
blackmailing dame, Roberts' every move plunges him deeper
into trouble...
The Cat's Canary -
1932 - 6 minutes, 52 seconds - Black & White - Animated -
In this bizarre musical tale, a cat (resembling Felix)
catches a canary, which he promptly eats for dinner. But
it is the trip down the digestive tract that gives this
cartoon distinction: the singing bird just won't stop
singing!
Picture-Quality varies on the DVD as each film has
experienced the ravages of time!!
