The anticipation that comes with a 3-2 pitch. The crack of the bat. The roar of the crowd as a high fly ball heads for the center field wall. The timeless moment between the slide at home and the umpires signal. It's baseball. Part of the fabric of American life for more than 100 years. Treat yourself to some peanuts and Cracker Jacks and thrill to the stories of two of baseball's all-time greats. What could be better than a double-header day at the ballpark right in your own home?

The Jackie Robinson Story - 1950 - 77 minutes - Black & White - The Jackie Robinson Story was made in 1950 and stars Jackie Robinson as himself. The story is an interesting commentary on race relations and the trials experienced by the Robinson family during this troubled period. By today's standards, the movie has several sections that are insulting and gratuitous - especially since this was a “feel good“ movie. Some of the historic footage of Ebbets Field and baseball are classic re-creations, made in the same period. Branch Rickey, played by Minor Watson, is an interesting character in the movie. Mr. Rickey was the “Steinbrenner / Charley Finley“ of his day and once recruited a midget because of his small strike zone. His oratories about the greatness of America and equality must be tempered by Rickey's enthusiasm for self promotion. In truth, one feels his desire to play Jackie was as much a marketing decision as anything. Breaking the color barrier in baseball was great press... for Branch Rickey and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The Lou Gehrig Story - Climax! - 1956 - 58 minutes - Black & White - Lou Gehrig played in 2,130 consecutive games from 1925-39 a major league record until Cal Ripken Jr. surpassed it in 1995; led AL in RBI 5 times and HRs 3 times; drove in 100 runs or more 13 years in a row; 2-time MVP (1927,36); hit .340 with 493 HRs over 17 seasons; led NY Yankees to 6 World Series titles; died at age 37 of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a rare and incurable disease of the nervous system now better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Born: 6/19/03 - Died: 6/2/41

A Bout With A Trout - 1947 - 7 minutes, 20 seconds - Color - Animated - Classic Little Lulu. To go to school or not? Lulu hears the arguments from both sides: a "devil" and "angel," each with Lulu's face. Lulu decides to listen to the "devil," skip school and go fishing. She catches a good-sized fish. In landing it, she bumps her head and has a terrible nightmare, complete with "Swinging On A Star" -- or would you rather be a fish? During her dream, she sees singing stars. One of the stars is Bing Crosby, the second is Bob Hope and the last one is Jerry Colonna. The theme of her dream is that Lulu should be at school learning. Upon awakening, Lulu heads back to school and arrives as the others are leaving. She is sent inside to write on the board, I will not play hooky. Fun for kids of all ages.
