Second-rate
talent agent Sammy Kamin (Billy Crystal) is always
looking for his next big star, usually at the expense of
his family and personal life. When Sammy's car plunges
into a Romanian river, Max (Gheorghe Muresan), a gentle
giant towering 7'7", saves him. A
monastery caretaker, Max lives in a quiet world of books
and a fantasy world where he is reunited with Lillianna,
a girl he kissed more than 20 years before and to whom
he continues to write unanswered letters. Sammy sees Max
as his ticket to the big time. After convincing him that
being a movie star might unite him with Lillianna, the
two embark on a journey that will take Max away from his
simple existence in Romania to Times Square and Las
Vegas. As Sammy gets to know Max, he discovers his sad
secret and begins to reassess his own life choices.
Surprisingly bittersweet, this Michael Lehmann
(HEATHERS, THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS) comedy is a
lesson in reevaluating what's important in life. Sight
gags are abundant: It's virtually impossible not to
chuckle at the diminutive Crystal sitting in the giant's
chair eating with tremendous utensils. At 7'7", Max
(Gheorghe Muresan) is considered a freak in his native
Romania and is banished to a monastery. When he saves
the life of Sammy Kamin (Billy Crystal), a
down-on-his-luck talent agent, a whole world of
opportunity opens up for him. The two embark on an
adventure that provides closure for Max with a woman he
has obsessed over for years and helps Sammy put his life
in perspective and regain what's important to him.
Michael Lehmann (HEATHERS, THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND
DOGS) directs this surprisingly bittersweet tale.
This film includes brief appearances by Lorna Luft,
Doris Roberts, and Estelle Harris.
The seeds of the story started with Crystal when he
worked with the 7'5" wrestler Andre the Giant on
THE PRINCESS BRIDE.
Crystal noticed the 7''7" Muresan while watching
the NBA draft on television, tracked him down, and
convinced him to do the film.
The name of Max's love interest was changed from
Angelica to Lillianna--Muresan's wife's name--because it
made Muresan more comfortable!! |
